For untold centuries these ancient mountain ranges was a special hunting ground for the native Cherokee. Within the Great Smoky National Park, 800 square miles, more than 700 miles of rivers and streams, 800 miles of trails and 200,000 acres of forestry. More than 1,600 different types of wildflowers and more than 140 species of trees live in the Garden of the Mountains. In the Cataloochee Valley return of the Elk has taken place. The best times to see the elk are early morning and late evening, sometimes on cloudy summer days and before or after storms

Pisgah National Forest so rich in history with logging roads and old settlements along the route. A 79 mile driving loop that begins just outside of Waynesville at the intersection of Highway 215 and 276 and travels through the Pisgah National Park. Sights along the way include Shining Rock Wilderness Area, Lake Logan, Middle Prong wilderness Area, Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, and the Cradle of Forestry in America.

    • Haywood County has 18 peaks over 6,000 feet.
    • Haywood County has the highest average elevation of any county in the east.
    • Haywood's rivers and springs are its own: all water in Haywood County originates here.
    • Pisgah National Forest in Haywood County is part of the National Forest Scenic Byway, a 79-mile loop.
    • Haywood County is a Civil War site: Kirk's Raid occurred here in 1865.
    • Waynesville was voted as a "low-cost Eden," best undiscovered town, best Main Street town, best small town and best mountain town in "Where to Retire" magazine's America's 100 Best Places to Retire (third edition).
    • Canton was originally Cherokee Indian Territory. A post office first opened here in 1837 and the community at the time was named Pigeon River.
